Bulls cryptic about Jimmy Butler's future: 'You always have to keep things open'

The Chicago Bulls had a chance to dispel any Jimmy Butler trade rumors on Wednesday, but instead executive vice president John Paxson and general manager Gar Forman only added gasoline to a rumor mill already engulfed in flames.

Paxson was anything but committal when asked about Butler, the team's lone All-Star in the 2016-17 season, saying, "You always have to keep things open."

Hmmm. OK. Usually teams come out and announce their commitment to building around their star player, even if they are secretly shopping him. Instead Paxson did quite the opposite, saying they'd love to "go out and get another superstar player to put with [Butler], but with the salaries we have, it's difficult to manage."

One might surmise that the Bulls were being noncommittal not just about Butler, but also about their whole offseason strategy in general, as not to tip their hand. But Paxson and Forman made pretty matter-of-fact statements about their desire to bring back several key pieces, including Rajon Rondo, Nikola Mirotic and coach Fred Hoiberg.
